Newport, once a proud and prosperous 19th century port city, that thrived on the heavy industries of steelmaking and shipping, it enjoyed its position midway between its larger sisters of Cardiff and Bristol and gateway to the Eastern Valleys of South Wales, for centuries it has benefitted from the confluence of rivers, roads and railways that have moulded a widely cosmopolitan community and supported a lively shopping centre and dynamic nightlife. However, recent decades have seen the closure of steelworks and manufacturing industries and, in common with many similar towns across Britain, the economic ravages of high inflation, unemployment, homelessness and empty shops have weighed heavily on its people.

Ron McCormick explores the Newport street scene focussing on the mundane, the ordinary, and the overlooked with unusual detail and surprising, serendipitous juxtapositions that confront us as we navigate the urban scene. It embraces perspectives on the architectural fabric and patina of the city's ‘roughscape', and documents the fleeting social interactions and micro dramas that can often erupt in the blink of an eye and disappear just as quickly. McCormick returns to the roots of his practice with a set of new photographs collected over the last twenty years and previously unseen. The full set of work in this continuing project is yet to be fully explored and edited.

This initial publication has been especially selected as a representative 'work in progress' stage, the start of what will be a mammoth endeavour. Consequently, it is published in a signed and numbered limited edition of 100 copies in association with a small exhibition for the biennial EYE International Festival of Photography that was held in Newport, South Wales - the home of Documentary Photography in May 2026. Presented in the windows of 'Sipping Tinnys' Bar, the exhibition is to be viewed from both outside and from insidethis unusual venue, and was part of the EYE Market Arcade 2026 collection of exhibitions. The NEWPORT ZOOPORT exhibition runs from May 15th to July 5th 2026.
